Household finance
Five questions to ask before calling a monthly budget “too high”
A budget category can look large without being automatically unreasonable. Context matters.
1. What does the category include?
One household may put insurance, utilities and maintenance inside “housing,” while another separates them.
2. Which costs are fixed for now?
Some expenses can change quickly; others require contracts, moving or longer planning horizons.
3. Is the issue level or timing?
A category can be manageable annually but difficult in a particular month because several costs arrive together.
4. What trade-off is being made?
Lower spending in one category may increase costs elsewhere.
5. What is the actual goal?
A useful budget starts from the household's own objectives rather than a universal percentage rule.
